ALL MY YANKEES!

January 29, 2009

Joe Torre may be 3,000 miles away from the Bronx, but the soap opera often associated with the NY Yankees is alive and well. Torre’s new book is coming out next week and he spews his wrath at the organization he took to six pennants , four world titles and 12 playoff appearances .The book gives him his “day in court,” so to speak. But, with what he ans his team accomplished during his tenure as NY Yankees skipper, he has earned the right to tell his side of the story. By the way, he must have been gloating when the Dodgers made the post season and the Yankees didn’t.

GREAT RUN, BLUE DEVILS!

January 27, 2009

The run is over! 49 consecutive Watauga Conference wins came to end Jan. 23 in the place where it began:Erwin. It came full circle as it was ended by the last team to defeat the Blue Devils: Happy Valley. it was an exciting 63-60 overtime win witnessed by a vocal, packed house. The Warriors played well and Unicoi County did not. It is as simple as that. They wanted it more and deserved to win. But, it was a great run!

GOOD LUCK, REX!

January 21, 2009

For the hopes of NY Jets fans, I do wish their new head coach, Rex Ryan, well. Lord knows, he’ll need it. Every time this franchise takes a step forward, they take four steps backwards. He has an outstanding resume’.

After all, as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, they were in the top five defensively for the last four years.

Good luck, Rex.

Welcome aboard, Bill Sheridan

January 19, 2009

Less than two days after Steve Spagnuolo left to become the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams, the NY Giants appointed linebackers coach, Bill Sheridan, asits new defensive coordinator. He has a tough act to follow but I am certain he will do well. The Giants have a long history of excellent, if not great, selections of assistant coaches. Welcome aboard, Bill Sheridan.

most unlikely super bowl

January 19, 2009

A Cardinals -Steelers Super Bowl! Who would’ve thunk it?But, that is the match-up this year and both teams deserve to be there. The Cardinals, given its long history of ineptitude, are the real surprise this year. After all, no one and I do mean no one, gave them any chance of making the Super Bowl, let alone even win a playoff game. But, this year the game will have a decidedly Pittsburgh flavor.

After all, Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt and his assistant, Russ Grimm, both coached for the Steelers for several years until moving to Arizona two seasons ago.

Personally, I like Pittsburgh to win. But, I must admit, I won’t be surprised if Arizona pulls a major upset. Either way, it has been a terrific NFL season.

LOST BUCS?

January 18, 2009

Well, the golden boy has been fired in Tampa. After seven seasons, four of which they failed to make the playoffs and winning one Super Bowl, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fird head coach Jon Gruden and the GM. Well, they Buccaneers did the right thing, as did Pat Bowlen iDenver. It was time for a change but I am certain Gruden will land elsewhere. A coach with his enthusiasm won’t be unemployed very long. Look for him to either be a head coach or an assistant with some one.

So long, Coach Spagnuolo

January 18, 2009

I am sorry to see defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo leave the NY Giants, but it would have happened sooner or later: leaving for head coaching job. In his case, the St. Louis Rams. He has a huge job in front of him but I have no doubt he will turn that once fine team around.Come to think of it, I don’t recall so many high profile head coaches being available at the same time.Any way, good luck with your first head coaching position. You have earned it!

Should Plax Come Back?

January 15, 2009

The question of the day is: Should Plax

Come Back ? While you can make a great case that the Giants were not the same without him, and they weren’t.

It is obvious to me that Burress has a deep

and serious underlying problem(s) in the

wake of his shooting and other related

charges pending. He may also have some deep psychological issues that may be addressed.

That, to me at least, is too much baggage for the Giants to carry and it may be time to cut their losses and look for another wide receiver in the draft.

So, should Plax come back? y answer is : NO

congratulations rickey and jim!

The balloting is in and the Baseball Hall of Fame

has two new members: Rickey Henderson and

Jim Rice. Henderson was a given. He had the numbers

Most stolen bases, lead off home runs and runs scored.

While I am a staunch NY Yankee fan, even I

wondered why Rice had been denied this honor

for so long! A 3x AL home run champion.

Rice hit 373 career home runs and compiled a

lifetime.298 batting average while playing on

two AL pennant winners(1975, 1986). Justice has been served.

In his last year on the ballot, Rice has finally earned his place in Cooperstown. Congratulations to both inductees.

the better team won!

January 12, 2009

I hate to admit it, but the Philadelphia Eagles were the bette team today against my NY Giants and deserved to move on to the NFC title game versus Arizona. They Giants looked listless and injured. Well, they still had a fine season and need to retool for next season. They won’t repeat as Super Bowl Champions but they did prove that last season was not a fluke. Thanks guys for a great run!
