Well, Shanahan is there!

December 31, 2008

It is anathema to root even a little bit for the Jets if you are a Giants’ fan. But, I feel for Jets fans. They deserve  better then what they have had in recent years. Come Jan. 12, it will be 40 years since the Jets upset the Colts in Super BowlIII. You cannot keep living in the past and they nned a head coach who can turn them around. Cowher turned them down and thats ok. But, Mike Shanahan is available and he has won two Super Bowls. He would make a fine replacement for Eric Mangini and maybe the change of scenery would be good for him.

GOOD CHOICE, BILL!

December 31, 2008

I don’t know what transpired between Woody Johnson and Bill Cowher. But, whatever it was, Cowher obviously didn’t like it and scrubbed the notion of becoming the next NY Jets head coach. Obviously, he likes television work and feels comfortable in front of the camera. Good choice, Bill! Who would want to coach a franchise that is a sneeze away from becoming like the Detroit Lions?

Here we go again!

December 29, 2008

The Jets have finished another disappointing season.

Yes, Brett Favre played ok but in the end, another personnel decision came back to bite them.

How many times have we seen this. OFTEN!

Pennington goes to Miami and helps lead the biggest

turn around in NFL history. He then beats

the Jets to win the division in eliminate the

jets from a post season appearance. While Iam

sorry to see Mangini go, the GM needs to take

a hit too. Time for the Jets to rebuild through the draft.

Also, maybe getting Bill Cowher wouldn’t be

a bad choice as head coach.

HOW ‘BOUT THEM EAGLES!

December 29, 2008

As a Giants’ fan, I don’t care for the Cowboys.

But, I have never seen a Cowboys team so

thoroughly whipped as I did against Philly

yesterday. They were AWFUL! Jerry Jones

must be seething and looking to fire anyone in his path!

Iwouldn’t want to face Philly right now-they are playing

the best ball they have played in recent years.

A FORGOTTEN FILM!

December 23, 2008

The passing of actor Charlton Heston reminded

me of a film he made around 1969. It was titled

“Number One.” Heston played a washed up

New Orleans Saints QB. Supposedly, it was

looselt based on the career of YA Tittle. I am not certain about that. But, the final scene has Heston

taking a vicious sack and is on his knees

with blood streaming down his face. That

is reminiscent of the famous photo of Tittle

by Morris Berman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

back in 1964 after being sacked by the Steelers’

John Baker. It was a good film and showed the

life of a pro quarterback at the end of his

career. It is a good yet forgotten film by one

of Hollywood’s better actors.

Who will go to Cooperstown?

December 23, 2008

After New Year’s Day ends, the big sports news

is who will be inducted into the Baseball

Hall of Fame? Rickey Henderson is on the

ballot. I never liied him, but, he has the

numbers(1,406 stolen bases, etc.). I will

be surprised if he isn’t voted in. What about

Jim Rice? Does he belong? Yes, he does.

How about Bert Blyleven? Yes, he does. How

about Tim Raines? Yes, he does, but he received such little support last year that I don’t think he will

get in. There are others on the ballot but they only take up space. The HOF should only be for the

“GREATS OF THE GAME,” not merely the

very good.

WHO IS THE NFL’S MVP?

December 23, 2008

This will be a difficult choice this season,

but who is the NFL’S MVP? Is it Kurt Warener,

helped the Cardinals limp into the playoffs?

Is it Eli Manning, who has led a Giants’ team

that has already proved that last year’s

Super Bowl run was no fluke. Is it s dark horse

like the Dolphin’s Chad Pennington, who quietly led the Dolphins to a winning record after winning

just one game in 2007. It is a tough call this season, but I feel with that gutty performance he gave last

Sunday, it will go to Peyton Manning.

she is the “Summitt”

December 23, 2008

She was won more games than any other

division I basketball coach, male or female.

She has won eight national titles, only John Wooden won more. No women’s, in some cases, men’s

program is more identified then Pat

Summitt is at the University of Tennessee.

The floor at Thompson-Boling Arena is

named” The Summitt.” I think there needs

to be a change. The Arena itself should be

called “The Summitt,” or something like

it. She has earned it! St. John’s University

in NYC named its arena after long time

basketball coach, Lou Carnesecca. He is

alive to enjoy it. Ms. Summitt has earned

such recognition too. It is time for that to

happen.

counting the days to spring training!

December 23, 2008

Yes, it is Christmas time, but for baseball

fans like me, I am counting the days to the

start of spring training. I like football and

basketball, but I LOVE baseball. It is truly

America’s pastime. It has marked the time

more than any other sport. Soon, in about six weeks, pitchers and catchers arrive in Florida and

Arizona. Before you know it, opening day

will arrive and all will be right with the worls

once again!

giants/titans back on track!

December 23, 2008

With victories yesterday, the NY Giants and

the Tennessee Titans have righted their ships

as the playoffs approach. The Giants, with

a dramatic comeback, pounded the Panthers

34-28, in overtime, to claim the NO. 1 seed

in the NFC. Same holds true for the Titans.

With a 31-14 dismantling of a potent Steelers

team, they to have earned the no. 1 seed in

the AFC. Bothe have earned a bye week.

Both teams need it as both have players

injured. But, come playoff time, both teams

will be loaded for bear. It will be an interesting

post season.
