How ’bout them Blue Devils!

February 29, 2008

Unicoi County keeps proving the pre-season prognosticators wrong as they defeated Rutledge, 80-66, to win their first Regional 1-AA Tournament title in John English’s tenure as head coach.

A spectacular team effort, led by Cameron Miller’s career-high 32 points gave the Blue Nation reason to be proud as Unicoi County continues to amaze in what has been a spectacular season.

Their record stands at 30-3 as they host a sectional game versus Austin East. Let’s enjoy this glorious moment and cheer the team on.

Miller was named Regional 1-AA Tournament MVP. Teammates Jonathan Canady and Derek Shelton were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Congratulations are in order!

Thank you, Ladies!

The Lady Devils season has come to end, once again at the hands of Elizabethton, 58-53, in the 1-AA Regional semi-finals. It is also the end of an era for a wonderful group of seniors: Alisha Mainer, Kayla Banks, Payge Barnett, Amanda VanHoy, Candace Meadows, Lauren Trivette and Kara Lynch. These young women have worn the Unicoi County blue and white with pride and distinction. Thank you, ladies.

Getting to No. 1 was well earned

February 26, 2008
Before the high-school basketball season began, the favorites of the Watauga Conference were Johnson County for the boys and South Greene for the girls.

The guys and girls at Unicoi County High School had other ideas.

The early predictions for Watauga Conference basketball were about as accurate as the polls in a presidential race that had all but annointed one failed candidate after another.

What mattered, in the end, was literally how the athletes played the game, and the teams from UCHS were nothing less than stellar throughout the season. Both the boys and girls took the District title and the right to say, “We’re No. 1.”

The Blue Nation, as Unicoi County’s fans are affectionatly known, have every right to cheer. It is quite an accomplishment to not only have a winning season but a championship, too.

We’re anxious to see how the rest of the tournament will go, and we’re hopeful for even better things to come. But whatever happens, our hats are off to the Blue Devils and the Lady Devils of Unicoi County High School.

Hip! Hip! Hooray!

WAY TO GO, GIRLS!

February 19, 2008

Congratulations are in order for head coach Glenn Fisher and Unicoi County High School Lady Devils as they defeated South Greene, 71-65, for the 2008 District 1-AA Basketball Tournament title.

Led by Tournament MVP Alisha Mainer, who had another double/double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Unicoi County was able to defeat the Lady Rebels after losing to them twice during their regular season.

The win gives Fisher’s team a 21-7 record heading into the Regionals. Way to go Girls, and congratulations. Lets get out there and cheer them on!

Congrats Devils

February 16, 2008

Well it’s certainly nice to see that we have football players signing to play at the college level.

Drew Rice signed to play football at at Carson Newman College last week and now we’ve heard that another 2007 football standout, Chase Edwards, will be signing with Emory & Henry College soon. Our sports writer, Kevin Lewis, and I were talking today and we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen a UCHS athlete sign to play football.

This says a lot for how much the football program at UCHS has grown the past few years and I think this is just the beginning.

These athletes and the entire football team have scored big with all of us here at The Erwin Record this season and we congratulate them on their accomplishments.

Keep up the hard work!

I’LL EAT CROW!

February 10, 2008

After this stunning Super Bowl win by the New York Giants, I must admit that I was wrong and eat crow. I thought Tom Coughlin should be replaced as head coach. For that, I must admit that I was wrong. He has proven to be an effective leader with an outstanding staff. Keep him around for a while!
